Important things to consider: Logo Design

When thinking about logo design it is helpful to also think about the various applications that your logo will hopefully make while growing up into maturity. Though out the life of a lasting logo it will have to convey effectively into diverse media. For Instance: Screen Printed on Tees, Embroidered on Hats, Enlarged for a Billboard, Icon Logo for Website, or Made into Black & White Vector for a small Promotional Item. In any of these scenarios you might have to pay your printer to re-create, re-draw, or modify your logo to work on a particular print media. This can get expensive when you are paying set-up fees and spreading your artwork all over town. Here are some things that you should think about when creating a custom company logo.

  1. Simple…but Recognizable: Can your logo be simplified down to 1 color, made 1-inch wide and still be recognizable with out cumbersome Photoshop Layer Effects?
  2. Vector Artwork: What is vector art? …and why is my printer asking me for it? Vector artwork, also called Line Art, is typically used to do color separations or large scale printing where your logo will have to be scaled up many times it’s size. Vector art will keep your logo looking clean no matter what size big or small.
  3. PMS Color Matching: PMS stands for Pantone (color) Matching System. It is the most common way to control that your logo color will be accurate, no matter what kind of printing method you do. Most printers will be able color match to PMS but will usually have to be asked and depending on the print house their might be a PMS matching charge.
